The Sony Playstation 3 (ps3) is the third console in the playstation series which was released in Japan, United States, Cananda, Hong Kong and Taiwan.  The remaining countries that are waiting for the release of the next phase should expect to see the ps3 on the shelves in spring 2007.  When the console was initially launched, 15 games were also launched alongside it. Some titles included Call of Duty 3, Madden NFL 07 and Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom.  Its main competitors on the market today are against Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii. 

Multiplayer gaming for the ps3 is offered as an online service to users. Multiplayer gaming allows any number of players from anywhere in the world to play together or against each other irrelevant of time zone.  At the time of the ps3 launch, Sony stated that this service should remain available at all times and will always be connected to provide multiplayer support.  However, as with most multiplayer gaming, developers and designers may impose a subscription which is payable by the player to use their game. 

Upon its release in North America, one of the most popular games so far has been Call of Duty 3.  This is the latest version in the Call of Duty series; this particular game is a shooting game and features many multiplayer functions and can allow up to 24 players per match.  The game is set in 1944 during the Normandy breakout.  When playing the game as part of a team, the teams are made up of the Allied Nations versus the Axis team.  Players can choose to play in either a player or ranked match and there are differences between the two types of matches.  Player’s matches allow the game hose to choose the mode and map whilst the ranked matches mean that the mode and map are selected at random.  Ranked matches mean that the in-game leaderboards will be updated with the contribution from each ranked match while player matches do not have any impact on the leaderboard.  In the multiplayer functions, players are able to choose from 7 classes of soldier and this class will be relevant to the characters weapons and ability.  Each 7 classes have varying degrees of weapons available to them and depending on the chosen side they will be able to utilize various weapons in different ways.

One of the launch titles, Resistance: Fall of Man has become a popular multiplayer game for the ps3.  The story is set in a world that has had an alternate history and therefore hasn’t experienced some of the world’s wars such as World War II.    The main character is US Army Ranger Sargeant Nathan Hale.  He has to try and fight off an invasion whilst other characters are becoming sick and falling into a coma.  The whole story is shown as a flashback which is narrated by Captain Rachel Parker from the British Resistance.  The multiplayer version of the game can feature up to 40 players and the designers of the game are currently undertaking work to enable players to be matched against each other using a ranking system.  This will enable players to have a fairer chance when playing against each other.  The game allows players to participate in ranked matches that gives the player experience and sets them matches to enable them to move up the ranks and increase their rewards for their character for winning each match.  For each game there are several maps to go through and eight different game modes which finalizes in the deathmatch.  There are two species to choose from, either the humans or chimera and both of these have various strengths and weaknesses.  However, the multiplayer version does not feature the vehicles found in the campaign mode.
